The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) has announced that fuel prices will remain unchanged in its latest review, despite an increase in the cost of imported fuel. The decision comes as a relief to consumers who have been dealing with high fuel costs in recent months.
According to EPRA, the average landed cost of imported Super Petrol rose by 2.80%, increasing from $611.69 per cubic metre in December 2024 to $628.80 per cubic metre in January 2025. Diesel prices also saw a significant increase, rising by 4.20% from $644.10 per cubic metre to $671.14 per cubic metre. Kerosene recorded the highest price jump, increasing by 4.89% from $649.64 per cubic metre to $681.44 per cubic metre during the same period.
Despite these cost increases, EPRA has opted not to raise local pump prices. While the regulator did not provide specific reasons for maintaining the current prices, such decisions are often influenced by factors such as government subsidies, market stability, and economic conditions.
Fuel prices have been a major concern for many Kenyans, as changes in fuel costs directly impact transportation, manufacturing, and the overall cost of living. Any increase in pump prices typically leads to higher prices for goods and services, placing additional financial pressure on households and businesses.
The government's fuel pricing strategy has been closely watched, especially after previous adjustments led to public concern over the rising cost of living. By keeping prices unchanged, the government may be aiming to cushion consumers from further financial strain.
However, with global oil prices fluctuating and the cost of fuel imports rising, it remains to be seen how long EPRA can maintain stable prices. The next price review will likely depend on international market trends and economic factors affecting Kenya’s fuel supply.
For now, motorists and businesses can breathe a sigh of relief as fuel costs remain steady, at least until the next review.
