Kenya Airways Expands Fleet with New Boeing 737-800 Addition

Kenya Airways (KQ) has expanded its fleet by acquiring a Boeing 737-800, which has a seating capacity of 170 passengers. This addition increases the airline’s total number of aircraft to 35 as part of its broader strategy to enhance capacity and improve operations.

The newly acquired aircraft, leased from Dubai Aerospace Enterprise (DAE), is expected to immediately boost KQ’s available seat inventory. This will offer passengers more travel options and flexibility, supporting the airline’s goal of strengthening connectivity across its network.

According to Kenya Airways Group Managing Director and CEO Allan Kilavuka, the acquisition aligns with KQ’s long-term growth strategy and its turnaround plan, Project Kifaru 2.

“The addition of this B737-800 marks a pivotal moment in our fleet expansion journey. It will increase our seat capacity and is a demonstration of our ability to adapt and grow in a challenging operating environment, even as the global aviation industry faces challenges in aircraft availability,” Kilavuka stated.

He emphasized that the expansion is part of Kenya Airways’ commitment to improving connectivity and providing top-quality service to passengers. The airline is also actively engaging in discussions to acquire more aircraft, including both narrow and wide-body models, to further enhance seat capacity and operational efficiency.

Kilavuka highlighted the importance of forming strategic partnerships with major aircraft manufacturers and leasing companies to facilitate fleet growth. “The acquisition of the B737-800 aircraft from DAE is a great milestone in our long-term partnership and solidifies our relationship as we work together in the future,” he said.

He also noted that this move signals KQ’s strength and reliability in the aviation industry. “Kenya Airways is a forward-thinking and reliable partner. We invite other stakeholders to join us in expanding our operations and strengthening our position in the global aviation market,” he added.

As KQ continues to navigate industry challenges, its proactive fleet expansion approach showcases resilience and a commitment to maintaining its status as a leading airline in Africa. The airline remains optimistic about securing more partnerships with global lessors to further enhance its market position and service quality.
