Uganda to Host First Middle East-Africa Digital Summit in 2025

Uganda is set to host the first-ever Middle East and Africa Digital Transformation Summit (MEA-DTS) from June 25 to 27, 2025, in Kampala. The event will bring together policymakers, industry experts, and business leaders to explore how digital technologies can drive economic growth and development in the region.

The summit was officially announced by Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, Uganda’s Minister for ICT and National Guidance, during a press briefing at the Uganda Media Center. He emphasized that the event aligns with Uganda Vision 2040, which aims to transform the country into a modern economy by leveraging digital technologies. The summit also supports the East African Community (EAC) Vision 2050, which prioritizes ICT-driven development in key sectors such as agriculture, tourism, and natural resources.

According to Dr. Baryomunsi, the summit will focus on using digital solutions to improve economic competitiveness and advance key Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These include eradicating poverty, promoting quality education, and boosting industry and innovation.

Themed "Driving Digital Transformation for a Connected and Inclusive MEA Region," the summit will be hosted under the patronage of Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni. It aims to highlight the role of digital technologies in financial inclusion, innovation, and cross-border trade.

Innocent Kawooya, CEO of HiPipo, a leading organization in digital innovation and financial inclusion, welcomed the opportunity to host the summit in Uganda. He noted that HiPipo has long been involved in digital transformation initiatives, including projects like 40 Days 40 FinTechs, Women in FinTech Initiative, and the Digital Impact Awards Africa.

Dr. Jonathan Pinifolo, Chief Operating Officer at the COMESA Business Council, stressed the importance of digital tools in enhancing trade across Africa and the Middle East. He noted that COMESA, Africa’s largest trading bloc, sees digital innovation as key to improving regional commerce and economic growth.

The MEA-DTS is being co-organized by the Ministry of ICT & National Guidance, the COMESA Business Council, and HiPipo. The summit is expected to attract participants from over 60 countries, including government officials, ICT industry leaders, investors, and innovators.

With digital transformation becoming a major driver of economic progress, Uganda’s hosting of this summit underscores its commitment to harnessing technology for sustainable development.
