Kenya’s Tourism Revenue Rises 20% to Ksh 452 Billion in 2024

Kenya’s Tourism Revenue Grows by 20% to Reach Ksh 452 Billion

Kenya’s tourism sector recorded significant growth in 2024, with total earnings rising by 20% to Ksh 452.2 billion, up from Ksh 377.5 billion in 2023. The increase was driven by aggressive marketing campaigns, diversification of tourism products, and the introduction of new flight routes.

Tourism Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano attributed the growth to strategic efforts to attract more visitors, noting that international tourist arrivals increased to 2.4 million last year. This boost underscores the sector’s recovery and expansion, cementing its position as Kenya’s second-largest foreign exchange earner after agriculture, which contributes about 70% of the country's Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

Key Tourism Markets and Visitor Numbers

The United States remained Kenya’s top source market for international tourists, accounting for 12.8% of total arrivals. Regional tourism also played a crucial role, with Tanzania and Uganda ranking as the second and third largest sources of visitors. In total, Kenya welcomed 975,883 tourists from African countries, making up 40.8% of all international arrivals.

Growth in Domestic Tourism and Hotel Occupancy

The rise in visitor numbers translated to higher hotel occupancy, with bed-night stays increasing by 12% to reach 5.17 million in 2024. This reflects a strong rebound in domestic and international travel, supported by improved infrastructure, favorable policies, and targeted tourism promotions.

Future Goals and Revenue Projections

Looking ahead, Kenya is setting ambitious targets to further boost its tourism sector. The government aims to attract at least 3 million international visitors and push tourism earnings to Ksh 560 billion. With continued investment in marketing, infrastructure, and product diversification, Kenya is positioning itself as a leading travel destination in Africa.

The tourism industry’s steady growth highlights its critical role in the country’s economy and reinforces Kenya’s appeal as a top global tourist destination.
