A Kenyan police officer deployed in Haiti under the Multinational Security Support Mission (MSS) has died after being shot during an operation in Ségur-Savien, Artibonite, on Sunday, February 23.
His death marks the first fatality involving a Kenyan officer since Kenya took charge of the UN-backed mission aimed at restoring stability in Haiti, a nation struggling with gang violence.
Officer Killed in Gunfight with Suspected Gangs
According to a statement from the National Police Service (NPS), the officer was part of a security team conducting patrols when they came under fire from suspected gang members. He sustained gunshot wounds and was rushed to the hospital but later succumbed to his injuries.
"While on patrol on February 23, 2025, the security team came under fire from suspected gang members. The officer sustained gunshot wounds and was rushed to the hospital, where he unfortunately succumbed to his injuries," NPS said in a statement.
The police service confirmed that the officer’s family had been informed of his passing and expressed condolences. "The Service conveys its deepest sympathies to the family and friends of the fallen officer and assures them of our unwavering support during this trying period," the statement added.
Kenyan Forces Continue Peacekeeping Efforts
Kenya is leading the multinational mission in Haiti, working closely with the Haiti National Police (HNP) to curb violence and restore peace. Despite the tragic loss, Kenyan authorities have reaffirmed their commitment to the mission and praised officers for their dedication.
"The mission, in collaboration with the Haiti National Police, is working tirelessly to restore peace and stability in Haiti. We commend the National Police Officers in Haiti who remain committed to achieving the mandate of the Multinational Security Support Mission," NPS stated.
The officer’s death highlights the risks faced by Kenyan forces in the peacekeeping mission. The Kenyan government, alongside international partners, has emphasized its goal of bringing order to Haiti, which has been plagued by gang violence and political instability.
The loss of the officer is a significant blow to the mission, but Kenyan authorities maintain that they remain focused on fulfilling their objective of stabilizing the troubled Caribbean nation.
