The Chief Executive of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), Godwin Kudzo Tameklo Esq., has pledged to take strong action against individuals and groups involved in illegal fuel trade. He emphasized that the NPA will strictly enforce regulations to ensure that fuel transportation and sales follow legal procedures.
Commitment to Ending Fuel Smuggling
Speaking during a meeting with the Bono Regional Security Council (REGSEC) as part of his familiarization tour, Tameklo outlined various illegal fuel activities, including smuggling, selling adulterated fuel, operating with expired licenses, and ignoring safety standards. He warned that anyone caught engaging in these activities would not be spared.
Tameklo also urged regional ministers not to intervene on behalf of individuals or businesses breaking fuel trade laws. He pointed out that some traders hide behind political connections to avoid accountability, a practice he said the NPA would not tolerate.
Support for Economic Reforms
Highlighting the broader impact of illegal fuel trade, Tameklo linked the issue to national economic recovery efforts.
“We must support President Mahama’s agenda of resetting the economy for growth and prosperity for all. If you plead on behalf of these criminals who are not playing by the rules, who will you call when you buy bad fuel in your car?” he asked.
He noted that collaboration between the NPA, National Security, and other agencies has already helped reduce supply leakages, such as export dumping.
Bono Region Pledges Support
Bono Regional Minister, Joseph Addae Akwaboah, assured the NPA of the region’s support in combating illegal fuel trade.
“I assure you of the Bono REGSEC’s support. We are here to serve, and we can work closely with the NPA to prevent these illegal activities,” he said.
Nationwide Efforts Against Illegal Fuel Trade
Tameklo’s meeting with REGSEC was part of a three-day tour of the Bono and Ashanti regions, where he visited key petroleum installations. He also met with the Omanhene of Sunyani to seek traditional authorities’ support in tackling fuel supply and export challenges.
The NPA continues to work closely with security agencies and stakeholders to ensure that the fuel industry operates within legal and safety guidelines, protecting consumers and supporting economic stability.
