The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has asked the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) to investigate goalkeeper Patrick Matasi over suspected match-fixing. This comes after videos surfaced online, raising concerns about possible match manipulation involving the Kakamega Homeboyz player.
Matasi was provisionally suspended for 90 days on Thursday as FKF launched an internal investigation into the allegations. The suspension bars him from participating in any FKF-sanctioned competitions while the matter is under review. FKF cited Section VII (2) of its 2016 Anti-Match Manipulation Regulations as the basis for its decision.
Letters seen by The Eastleigh Voice indicate that FKF has formally reached out to both the DCI and EACC for assistance in uncovering the circumstances surrounding the allegations. In the correspondence, FKF stressed the seriousness of match manipulation, likening it to obtaining money by false pretense, a crime under Section 313 of Kenya’s Penal Code. Additionally, the federation pointed out that attempts or conspiracies to engage in match-fixing could fall under Section 47A of the Anti-Corruption and Economic Crimes Act.
While acknowledging that Kenya’s criminal justice system does not explicitly address match-fixing, FKF emphasized its commitment to tackling the issue in collaboration with law enforcement agencies. The federation noted that although it is conducting an internal probe, external support is necessary to ensure a thorough investigation.
FKF stated that appropriate action would be taken once investigations are complete. This could include disciplinary measures under its regulations and possibly exposing other individuals involved in match manipulation. The federation also hinted at engaging the government for potential legislative amendments to formally criminalize match-fixing in Kenya.
In its letter, FKF appealed to the state agencies, saying, “Your assistance in this matter will be highly appreciated as the Federation works towards curbing this vice and engaging the relevant body for the necessary legislative amendments.”
With the investigation ongoing, the case has drawn attention to match-fixing concerns in Kenyan football, raising questions about the integrity of the sport and the need for stricter regulations to prevent similar incidents in the future.
