Brazil have dismissed head coach Dorival Junior following their humiliating 4-1 defeat to Argentina, a result that widened the gap between the two rivals in South America's World Cup qualifiers.
The defeat in Buenos Aires left Brazil in fourth place in the South American qualifying table, 10 points behind leaders Argentina. Despite Brazil’s strong chances of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup, the poor results under Dorival’s leadership led to his dismissal.
CBF Confirms Dorival’s Exit
The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) confirmed the coach’s departure in a brief statement, wishing him success in his career and announcing the search for a new head coach.
Dorival, who took over in January 2024, managed only five wins in 15 games. His struggles were evident in last year’s Copa America, where Brazil was eliminated in the quarter-finals by Uruguay. Argentina went on to win the tournament, increasing pressure on Brazil to perform better.
Argentina’s Domination and Brazil’s Struggles
The match against Argentina exposed Brazil’s weaknesses, with Argentina controlling the game. At one point, Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez even juggled the ball inside his penalty area, a move seen as a sign of confidence and dominance.
Before the game, Brazil winger Raphinha had made bold statements about his team’s chances, but Argentina’s players mocked him after their convincing victory.
Brazil’s struggles go beyond Dorival’s tenure. Since their infamous 7-1 defeat to Germany in the 2014 World Cup semi-finals, the team has not advanced past the quarter-finals in any World Cup.
Search for a New Coach
With Dorival gone, the CBF is considering major names for the role. Reports suggest Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti remains a top target, even though he has no previous experience in international football.
The Brazilian FA had pursued Ancelotti in 2023 when his future at Real Madrid seemed uncertain. However, his contract with the Spanish club runs until 2026, and Madrid officials have denied any contact between Ancelotti and the CBF.
Other reports claim that Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has also been shortlisted for the position.
With four qualifying matches remaining, Brazil must now find a new leader to restore their dominance in South American football.
