The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has arrested 51 irregular migrants from Mali in Karu Local Government Area of Nasarawa State. The group consists of 11 females and 40 males, all between the ages of 16 and 19.
Victims of Trafficking and Smuggling
According to a statement from NIS spokesperson Akinsola Akinlabi on Wednesday, preliminary investigations suggest the individuals were victims of trafficking in persons (TIP) and smuggling of migrants (SOM). They were found without valid travel documents or residence permits.
“The arrested individuals have been taken into custody for further profiling and investigation to determine the circumstances of their migration and any potential involvement of trafficking or smuggling networks,” the statement read.
NIS Commitment to Border Security
The NIS emphasized its commitment to protecting Nigeria’s borders against illegal migration while ensuring that the rights of migrants who comply with immigration laws are upheld.
The agency reassured the public that it is working with relevant authorities and stakeholders to combat human trafficking and migrant smuggling.
“The Nigeria Immigration Service remains committed to ensuring that Nigeria’s borders are protected against illegal migration while upholding the rights of migrants who comply with the country’s immigration laws,” Akinlabi stated.
Call for Public Support
The NIS urged Nigerians to report any suspicious migration activities to the nearest immigration offices to support efforts in national security and migration management.
With increasing concerns over human trafficking and illegal migration, authorities continue to monitor and address cases involving undocumented migrants. The investigation into the arrested Malians will determine their next steps, including possible deportation or legal action against traffickers.
