Kwale Governor Fatuma Achani has halted an illegal attempt to sell the 18-acre land surrounding the historic Kongo Mosque, a move welcomed by conservationists and religious leaders. The mosque, which dates back to the 14th century, is a significant cultural and religious landmark but has recently faced land-grabbing threats.
Illegal Land Sale Halted
The disputed land had been fraudulently claimed by two individuals who illegally obtained title deeds and attempted to sell it. Advertisements had even been placed in newspapers offering the land for sale. However, the Kwale County government quickly intervened, imposing restrictions (caveats) to prevent any unlawful transactions.
Governor Achani, speaking at the launch of a street lighting project at Kongo Mosque, assured residents that her administration is committed to protecting the land and preserving Kwale’s heritage.
“We have taken firm action to stop these individuals from taking over this land. With support from government agencies, we are confident that we will reclaim it,” she said.
Government Seeks Legal Action
To ensure the fraudulent title deeds are revoked, the Kwale County government has formally written to the National Land Commission (NLC) and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI). The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has also stepped in to assist in preventing further illegal transactions.
Governor Achani praised the EACC and other agencies for their support in tackling land grabbing in Kwale.
“I appreciate the backing from these institutions, which have shown a strong commitment to ensuring that this land remains with the community,” she said.
Part of a Wider Land Recovery Effort
The effort to protect the Kongo Mosque land is part of a broader initiative by the county government to recover illegally acquired property. Governor Achani’s administration, working with the EACC, has successfully reclaimed several pieces of land, including Kisite Mpunguti, Chale Island, two plots in Diani, and more land in Lungalunga Sub-County.
Kwale County Attorney Salim Gombeni urged residents to be vigilant and report any suspicious land transactions.
“Land matters are taken very seriously in this county, and our priority is to recover all illegally acquired land,” he said.
Governor Achani reassured the public that her administration will remain firm in reclaiming community land unlawfully taken and ensuring historical sites like Kongo Mosque are protected for future generations.
