Panic spread along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Monday after a car veered off Otedola Bridge, causing concern among commuters and pedestrians. The vehicle, which was carrying four occupants, crashed and left them all with varying degrees of injury.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed the incident, stating that the driver had been rescued and rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment. The accident occurred around the same area where a gas-laden truck exploded a few weeks ago, claiming the lives of at least six people.
In a post shared on X, LASTMA provided an update on the crash, assuring the public that efforts were underway to manage the situation. "Report of an accident of a car that fell from Otedola Bridge. The driver has been rescued and taken to the nearby hospital," the agency wrote.
According to the statement, traffic congestion built up in the area following the accident. However, LASTMA reassured the public that its officers were present, actively working to clear the traffic. "There is a backlog from Otedola Bridge to Berger inward Secretariat, but our officers are on the scene managing the situation effectively," the post continued. Additional officers were stationed in the area to assist with traffic control and provide necessary support.
The incident caused significant disruption to traffic in the region, but authorities acted quickly to address the situation and ensure that emergency services were on hand to assist the injured. While the cause of the accident has not been confirmed, the crash has added to ongoing concerns about safety on the bridge, especially after the recent explosion involving a gas truck.
As investigations continue, commuters are urged to exercise caution when driving through the area and to follow instructions from traffic officers to avoid further delays.
