Mount Kanlaon, located between the provinces of Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental in the Central Philippines, erupted again on the morning of April 8, sending a column of ash about 4,000 meters into the sky. This eruption has raised concerns, and the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) has kept the alert level at 3, which has been in place since December 2024 after a previous eruption.
The level 3 warning is part of a five-tier system and signals an increased risk of lava flows and a potential eruption in the coming weeks. PHIVOLCS has been closely monitoring the volcano, which is one of around 24 active volcanoes in the country. Teresito Bacolcol, the head of PHIVOLCS, explained that changes in magma movement could prompt a change in the alert level. If magma rises rapidly, the warning level could increase to 4, indicating a more dangerous eruption. However, if magma activity slows down, the level may be lowered to 2.
The Philippines is part of the Pacific "Ring of Fire," a region known for frequent seismic activity and volcanic eruptions, making such events a constant concern. As one of the most active volcanic regions in the world, the Philippines is accustomed to monitoring and managing the risks posed by eruptions.
Local authorities have urged residents to remain alert and follow safety guidelines. They have also advised officials to be ready for potential evacuations should the situation worsen. PHIVOLCS continues to track any signs of increased volcanic activity, ensuring that timely warnings are provided.
The situation remains fluid, and experts continue to study the behavior of the volcano, as it could change rapidly. With the heightened alert status, the country is preparing for any potential escalation, urging the public to stay informed and prepared.
