Thirteen people, including two Chinese nationals and eleven Ghanaians, have been arrested in connection with illegal mining activities in Ghana's Western Region.
The arrests were made during a targeted operation by the Western Central Regional Police Command along the Bonsa River, a known hotspot for unlicensed mining. The two Chinese suspects, identified as 38-year-old Huan Ciongjian and 56-year-old Ling Yong, were immediately handed over to the Ghana Immigration Service. Authorities say the two are under investigation and may face repatriation after further inquiry.
Meanwhile, eleven Ghanaians involved in the same operation are now facing legal action. Seven of them — Ibrahim Dauda, Michael Tettey Komlorm, Douglas Ayambila, Elvis Aborta, Nsoh Oto (alias Agorogo), Kwadwo George (alias Sergio), and Emmanuel Van (alias Atta) — have already been arraigned before the Special Court for Illegal Mining in Sekondi.
These suspects have been charged with conspiracy to commit a crime and engaging in mining activities without proper licensing. They have been remanded into custody, with their next court appearance scheduled for April 17, 2025.
Four other individuals connected to the case are also expected to appear before the court soon, facing similar charges.
The police operation forms part of a wider effort to crack down on illegal mining, commonly referred to as galamsey, which has caused significant environmental damage across parts of Ghana. Illegal mining operations often result in the destruction of rivers, forests, and farmland, while posing serious health risks to communities nearby.
Authorities have been under pressure to take firm action against both local and foreign nationals involved in these activities, as the long-term environmental impact continues to draw national concern.
Officials say the crackdown will continue in other areas as law enforcement agencies intensify efforts to protect the country’s natural resources.
The Ghana Immigration Service and the police have not yet disclosed when further updates on the investigation will be made public.
