Gunmen Kill Two Chinese Nationals, Police Officer in Abia State

Two Chinese nationals and a police officer were shot dead after gunmen ambushed their convoy in Abia State, Nigeria.

The attack happened on Friday evening in Uturu, Isuikwuato Local Government Area, as the victims were heading to a company site in the Agukwu-Amaya area of the Ndundu community.

Maureen Chinaka, spokesperson for the Abia State Police Command, confirmed the incident in a statement released on Saturday. She said the manager, identified as Mr. Quan, his colleague Mr. Cai, and a police escort, Inspector Audu Saidu, lost their lives in the attack.

Chinaka also revealed that the attackers stole Inspector Saidu’s rifle before fleeing the scene.

Shortly after receiving the distress call, security forces launched a rescue operation. The police, in collaboration with the military and other security agencies, responded swiftly in an effort to secure the area and recover survivors.

According to the police spokesperson, three Chinese nationals were rescued without any injuries, while one other expatriate was found with wounds and taken to hospital. Inspector Uba Ahmed, another officer in the convoy, also sustained a gunshot wound to the leg and is currently receiving treatment alongside the injured expatriate at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC).

On Saturday, a tactical team led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations) visited the scene of the attack. The coordinated efforts of the police, military, and local residents also led to the safe rescue of Inspector Ijeagwa Friday, who was unharmed.

Chinaka confirmed that an investigation is underway to track down those responsible for the ambush.

She further stated that the Commissioner of Police in Abia State, Danladi Isa, has assured the public that those behind the attack will be brought to justice.

The police also urged the public to remain vigilant and continue with their lawful activities, while encouraging residents to report any suspicious activity or persons to the nearest police station. Emergency contact numbers have been made available to aid quick reporting.
