An Israeli national kidnapped in Taraba State has been rescued by Nigerian security forces following a coordinated operation.
According to the state police command's spokesperson, James Saminu, the victim, Gil Itamar, was abducted on Thursday morning while travelling along the Takum–Chanchanji road. Itamar, an employee of the construction company SCC, was reportedly under military escort when armed kidnappers attacked and took him hostage in Atim, a local community in the area.
Saminu revealed that a distress call was made at about 9:15 a.m. by one Alhaji Saidu, a colleague of the victim at SCC. The report indicated that heavily armed criminals had intercepted the convoy and kidnapped Itamar.
In response, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Takum swiftly mobilised his officers, working alongside operatives from the 67 Police Mobile Force (PMF), military personnel, and local hunters. The joint team launched a cordon and search operation aimed at rescuing the victim.
Their efforts led them to Kofai Ahmadu, where a fierce exchange of gunfire broke out between the security team and the kidnappers. Overwhelmed by the firepower and numbers, the abductors were forced to flee the scene, allowing the team to safely rescue the hostage.
Mr. Itamar was immediately taken to SCC’s medical facility in Takum, where he is currently receiving medical treatment.
The police have launched a manhunt for the fleeing suspects involved in the kidnapping. Saminu confirmed that the operation remains ongoing and efforts are being intensified to track down the criminals and bring them to justice.
Taraba State Commissioner of Police, Bretet Simon, praised the bravery and professionalism of the police, military, and local hunters involved in the operation. He reassured the public of the police’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property across the state.
The rescue highlights the growing threat of kidnapping in parts of Nigeria, as well as the importance of swift, coordinated security responses in dealing with such incidents.
