Gathoni Wamuchomba Summoned Over Anti-Ruto Chants in Kiambu

Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba has been summoned by police in Kiambu over allegations of inciting anti-Ruto protests.

The summons follows President William Ruto’s recent tour of the Mt Kenya region, where parts of Kiambu County saw a hostile reception from some residents. During the visit on Friday, chants of “Ruto must go” were heard from sections of the crowd, which authorities now believe were influenced by Wamuchomba’s alleged actions.

The outspoken legislator, who is seen as an ally of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, reportedly held a separate meeting on the same day. Police claim this gathering may have triggered public demonstrations and stoked anti-government feelings.

Wamuchomba confirmed the police summons through a statement on her official X (formerly Twitter) account, saying she had received a call from the Kiambu County Criminal Investigations Officer (CCIO). In her message, she did not shy away from criticism, saying the summons were politically motivated and driven by the public’s dissatisfaction with the government’s failure to deliver on its promises.

“The CCIO Kiambu has through a telephone called and sermoned me; because the great people of Githunguri refused to be lured by fake promises and projects that never materialised. Arrests you can do, but that will not change the facts! No more lies! You promised, deliver!” she wrote.

Wamuchomba has been a vocal critic of President Ruto’s leadership, often accusing his administration of failing to fulfill key pledges made to the electorate. Her public remarks have drawn support from some quarters while also attracting criticism from those within the ruling coalition.

The incident underscores rising political tensions within Mt Kenya, a region that played a key role in Ruto’s election victory in 2022 but is now showing signs of growing discontent.

It remains unclear whether Wamuchomba will face formal charges, but the summons mark a new phase in the ongoing rift between sections of the political elite and the current administration.
