Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has condemned the violent attack on former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua during a Sunday church service at PCEA Mwiki in Kasarani. Kalonzo described the incident as a "national shame" and questioned the motive behind attacking someone at a place of worship. In a statement released on Sunday night, he called those responsible "workers of inequity and servants of the devil," emphasizing the inappropriateness of such violence in a sacred space.
The attack occurred when Gachagua and his team arrived at the church for the service. Unknown individuals attempted to storm the premises, causing panic among congregants. Reports indicated that gunshots were heard during the chaos, though no injuries were reported. Gachagua's security team acted quickly to shield him and secure the area, with police forces stepping in to disperse the attackers and restore order.
After the incident, Gachagua expressed his concern over what he believes to be a growing effort to restrict his freedom of movement and association. He criticized what he sees as a deliberate attempt to curtail his ability to travel and interact with like-minded individuals. "It is unfortunate," Gachagua stated, acknowledging the situation in a brief remark.
While he refrained from offering further details immediately, Gachagua hinted at addressing the attack more comprehensively during a scheduled interview. "I don’t understand why goons were sent to attack us during a church service. I have things to say," he added, promising more insight in his upcoming interview.
Several prominent leaders, including MPs James Gakuya, Kamande Mwafrika, Amos Mwago, and others, accompanied Gachagua during the service. The attack has sparked widespread condemnation, raising concerns about the safety of political leaders and the sanctity of worship spaces. The incident has also intensified the growing political tensions in the country, further highlighting the need for security and respect for peaceful gatherings.
