Thomas Muller’s 25-year association with Bayern Munich is set to end at the close of the 2024/25 season, drawing the curtain on one of the most iconic careers in modern football. The 35-year-old German midfielder leaves behind a legacy defined by loyalty, leadership, and remarkable achievements on both club and international stages.
Muller joined Bayern’s youth academy in 2000 and rose through the ranks to make his senior debut in 2008. Since then, he has become a central figure in Bayern’s success, amassing an incredible 743 appearances and scoring 247 goals. Over the span of 17 years in the first team, he has collected 33 major trophies, cementing his place in the club's history.
Among his most notable accomplishments are 12 Bundesliga titles—more than any other player in the league’s history. Muller also played a key role in Bayern’s treble-winning campaigns, helping secure UEFA Champions League trophies in both 2013 and 2020. His influence extended beyond club football, as he was instrumental in Germany’s 2014 FIFA World Cup triumph.
In December 2023, Muller signed a one-year contract extension with Bayern, despite seeing his playing time reduced. Still, his passion for the club never faded. In a heartfelt message to fans, he shared his willingness to continue playing, even in a supporting role.
"Even after all these years, regardless of the minutes I play, I still really enjoy being on the pitch with the lads and fighting for titles together for our team," he said, as quoted by Sky Sports. "I could have easily imagined taking on this role next year as well."
However, Bayern’s leadership decided not to extend his contract further. Club CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen confirmed the move was mutual, though Muller admitted the outcome didn’t reflect his personal hopes.
"The club consciously decided not to negotiate a new contract with me for next season," Muller said. "Even if this wasn't in line with my personal wishes, it's important that the club follows its convictions. I respect this step, which the board and supervisory board certainly didn't take lightly."
As Muller prepares to depart, he leaves behind more than just statistics—he leaves a legacy of dedication, excellence, and deep connection to the club he’s called home for a quarter of a century.
