The head of the U.S. Space Force base in Greenland has been removed from her position after sending an email that challenged official messaging following Vice President JD Vance’s recent visit to the territory.
Col. Susan Meyers, who was in charge of Pituffik Space Base in Greenland, was fired over what the Space Force described as a “loss of confidence in her ability to lead.” The decision came after Meyers sent a base-wide email defending the base’s relationship with Denmark and Greenland—both of which are seen as key allies in the region.
“Commanders are expected to adhere to the highest standards of conduct, especially as it relates to remaining nonpartisan in the performance of their duties,” the Space Force said in a statement late Thursday.
According to a report by Military.com, Meyers sent the email shortly after Vice President Vance’s visit to Greenland in late March. A U.S. official later confirmed to the Associated Press that the email supported Denmark and Greenland, countries that are currently at the center of tense political discussions.
Greenland is an autonomous territory of Denmark, a NATO member and longstanding U.S. ally. Tensions rose following Vice President Vance’s trip and President Donald Trump’s renewed push to annex Greenland for what he says are national security reasons. Trump's stance has created diplomatic friction, especially after he refused to rule out the use of military force.
The Pentagon reacted strongly to Meyers' email. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell referenced the Military.com article and stated that “actions to undermine the chain of command or to subvert President Trump’s agenda will not be tolerated at the Department of Defense.”
Meyers' dismissal is one in a string of recent high-level military firings under the Trump administration. Other senior officials removed from their positions include Adm. Lisa Franchetti, the former Chief of Naval Operations; Adm. Linda Fagan, who led the U.S. Coast Guard; and Vice Adm. Shoshana Chatfield, the only woman on NATO’s military committee.
Additional firings have included Gen. CQ Brown Jr., former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and Gen. Tim Haugh, who served as the head of U.S. Cyber Command and directed the National Security Agency.
