Ghana’s President John Mahama has suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo following allegations of misconduct, including tampering with court records and misusing public funds. The decision was made after three individuals filed a petition, prompting an investigation into her conduct.
Felix Kwakye Ofosu, a spokesperson for the president, confirmed that the Council of State reviewed the matter and determined that a prima facie case had been established. As a result, Torkornoo is now suspended while an investigation is conducted. According to the presidential statement, the suspension allows for a thorough review of the allegations.
Torkornoo, who was appointed Chief Justice in June 2023, is the 15th person to hold this position and the third woman to do so in Ghana’s history. However, her suspension marks a significant moment as it is the first time in the country’s history that a sitting Chief Justice has been subjected to a formal investigation under the constitution. This unprecedented action highlights the seriousness with which the government is treating the matter.
The president has given Torkornoo 10 days to respond to the allegations. A five-member investigative committee has been formed to look into the claims. The committee is led by Gabriel Pwamang, a Supreme Court Justice, and includes Daniel Domelevo, the former Auditor-General of Ghana. Their task will be to review the evidence and determine whether the allegations hold merit.
President Mahama, who assumed office in January 2025, has made it clear that fighting corruption is a priority for his administration. The suspension of the Chief Justice, a position held in high regard, reflects the president’s commitment to tackling graft within the country’s judiciary system.
While judicial leaders in Ghana typically step down due to retirement or political circumstances, Torkornoo’s case stands out due to its legal and constitutional nature. The investigation into her conduct is expected to set a significant precedent for the country’s judicial processes moving forward.
