Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga has spoken out after her deputy, Joseph Oyugi Magwanga, narrowly escaped an apparent assassination attempt, calling for swift investigations and calm among residents.
The incident occurred on Sunday, May 11, in Got Rateng’, Kasipul constituency, when unknown gunmen attacked Magwanga’s official vehicle. Fortunately, the deputy governor was not inside the car at the time, a fact police say may have saved his life. His vehicle was being driven by a member of his security team when it came under fire. A bullet struck the rear of the car, prompting the driver to speed away from the scene.
Following the attack, Governor Wanga condemned the incident, describing it as alarming and deeply concerning. In an official statement released on Monday, May 12, she emphasized the need for urgent investigations and prosecution of those responsible. “Any occurrence that raises concern about the safety and security of our leaders deserves attention and immediate action,” Wanga said.
She further noted the attack comes at a time when Homa Bay County is already grieving the recent loss of Kasipul MP Charles Ong’ondo Were, urging residents not to give in to panic. “I appeal to the people of Homa Bay to remain calm and united during this difficult time. Let us reject violence in all its forms and stand together for peace, justice, and the rule of law,” she added.
Wanga called on security agencies to act swiftly and impartially in their investigations, ensuring those behind the attack face justice. She stressed the importance of maintaining peace and trusting the country’s justice system to handle the matter effectively.
Deputy Governor Magwanga, meanwhile, revealed that he had been warned earlier about being followed. Acting on this tip, he switched vehicles and changed his route while heading home. This precaution likely saved his life, as the attackers ambushed a car they mistakenly believed he was in. His security team, riding in the targeted vehicle, returned fire, forcing the assailants to flee.
Magwanga has also appealed for calm and urged authorities to conduct thorough investigations to bring the perpetrators to justice. The attack has added to the tension in Homa Bay, but both leaders are calling for unity and resilience during this challenging period.
