Nominated Senator Gloria Orwoba has been summoned by the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) disciplinary committee over alleged misconduct and breach of party rules. The summons follows several actions by the senator that the party says show disloyalty and go against its constitution and code of conduct.
Orwoba’s troubles began after she was seen at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) on April 17, where she joined other leaders in welcoming former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i back into the country. She also accompanied Matiang’i to his first political rally at Gusii Stadium and later made remarks on a local radio station that appeared critical of the government.
The UDA party argues that these actions indicate support for a rival political group, which goes against her obligation as a nominated senator under the UDA banner. The party stated that her conduct amounts to gross misconduct, a violation of her oath of office, and disobedience to the UDA’s code of conduct and the Constitution of Kenya.
“You are required to appear before the disciplinary committee on May 16 at the UDA headquarters on Ngong Road,” read the letter signed by disciplinary committee chairperson Charles Njenga. The letter warns that if she is found guilty, the committee’s decision will be forwarded to the party’s National Executive Committee for further action.
Orwoba is expected to defend herself and explain why she should not be punished for allegedly promoting another political outfit while still holding UDA membership. The party emphasized that she has the right to represent herself during the proceedings or appear with a legal representative.
This is not the first time Senator Orwoba has faced disciplinary challenges. In January 2025, she was suspended from the Senate for 79 days, although the suspension was later reduced to 30 days. The suspension followed an earlier case in September 2023, when she failed to prove claims that the Senate clerk made sexual advances towards her. She secured a court order blocking the Senate’s action, but the order was lifted after she failed to appear before a special committee handling the case.
The latest summons puts Orwoba back in the spotlight just weeks after she was readmitted to the Senate.
