Ceasefire Fails as Pakistan Violates Truce, Tensions Rise Again

Tensions between India and Pakistan escalated once more just hours after both sides agreed to a ceasefire on May 10, 2025, following a rare direct military conversation.

The agreement, reached between the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs) of India and Pakistan, was intended to halt all military actions from 5:00 p.m. IST. But the truce quickly broke down as reports of gunfire and drone activity emerged by nightfall in Indian regions including Jammu and Kashmir, Rajasthan, Punjab, and Gujarat. Indian forces responded immediately.

Speaking late in the evening, Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said Indian troops had been ordered to stay on high alert and respond firmly to any new aggression. He called the violation extremely serious and warned that India would not tolerate any further provocation.

This ceasefire breach followed four days of intense military action involving missile strikes and precision attacks on air bases on both sides. The ceasefire was supposed to ease tensions, but instead, attention quickly shifted to conflicting claims about who brokered the deal.

India insists the understanding was purely bilateral and based on direct military communication. However, Pakistan credited the United States with playing a major role in securing the agreement. Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif publicly thanked U.S. President Donald Trump and senior U.S. officials, presenting the truce as a result of American mediation. The U.S. State Department supported this narrative, citing the involvement of Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio in behind-the-scenes diplomacy.

Unverified reports also mentioned efforts by Turkey, Saudi Arabia, the UK, and China, though there is no clear evidence that these nations influenced the final agreement. India’s Ministry of External Affairs dismissed claims of international involvement and clarified that no wider talks were planned. This directly contradicted the U.S. State Department’s claim that further discussions on broader issues were also part of the deal.

Meanwhile, Indian authorities raised concern over a surge of misinformation online, which they say originates from Pakistan. Of particular concern were false claims that Indian airstrikes had hit a Pakistani nuclear storage site, and rumors suggesting Pakistan had activated its National Command Authority, which oversees nuclear weapons. Indian officials warned these false narratives could further destabilize the fragile situation.

While the possibility of renewed talks remains open, military analysts suggest the ceasefire’s collapse may lead to more frequent drone incursions and air defense skirmishes between the two nations in the near future.
