UDA Expels Senator Gloria Orwoba for Gross Misconduct

The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) has expelled nominated Senator Gloria Orwoba, accusing her of gross misconduct and repeated breaches of the party’s rules.

In a statement released on Monday, UDA Secretary General Hassan Omar announced that the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) had unanimously approved Orwoba’s expulsion. The decision followed recommendations from the party’s Disciplinary Committee after what the party described as a thorough review of her conduct.

“After a comprehensive review of the Disciplinary Committee’s report and in line with Article 29 of the UDA Constitution, the NEC found Senator Orwoba’s actions incompatible with the values and objectives of the party,” Omar said.

Orwoba was found guilty of making public statements that allegedly damaged the party’s image. She also reportedly ignored several summonses issued by the Disciplinary Committee. According to the party, rather than appearing in person as requested, she responded only through her legal representatives, a move that UDA said undermined internal dispute resolution procedures.

As part of the next steps, UDA has written to the Registrar of Political Parties and the Speaker of the Senate to formally initiate her removal from her position as a nominated senator. If these institutions act on the party’s request, Orwoba will officially lose her seat in the Senate.

The disciplinary action marks a significant development in the internal affairs of UDA, one of Kenya’s leading political parties. It also highlights growing tensions between the party’s leadership and some of its members over discipline and communication.

While Orwoba has yet to issue a public response to her expulsion, the situation has sparked mixed reactions among observers and political commentators. Some see it as a sign of the party enforcing discipline, while others view it as part of wider internal power struggles.

Orwoba, who was nominated by UDA, has previously been vocal on various national issues. Her expulsion may now raise questions about dissent, accountability, and how political parties in Kenya handle internal criticism.
