Real Madrid Appoint Xabi Alonso as Head Coach Until 2028

Real Madrid have officially confirmed that club legend Xabi Alonso will take over as head coach from June 1, 2025.

The Spanish giants announced on Sunday that Alonso has signed a three-year contract running until June 30, 2028. The appointment marks a return to Madrid for one of the club’s most respected former players and a rising star in the world of football management.

Alonso played for Real Madrid between 2009 and 2014, featuring in 236 official matches. During his five-year spell, he helped the club win six major trophies. These included La Décima—their historic 10th UEFA Champions League title in 2014—as well as a European Super Cup, one La Liga title, two Copa del Rey trophies, and a Spanish Super Cup.

In addition to his club achievements, Alonso had an illustrious international career with Spain. He earned 113 caps and was part of the golden generation that won the 2010 FIFA World Cup and back-to-back European Championships in 2008 and 2012.

Alonso began his coaching journey at Real Madrid’s youth academy, managing the Under-14 A team in the 2018–2019 season. That year, he led the young squad to both the League title and the Champions Tournament, showing early signs of his coaching promise.

He now returns to the Santiago Bernabéu as one of the most highly regarded coaches in Europe, following a historic run with Bayer Leverkusen. During his time in Germany, Alonso led Leverkusen to a domestic treble, winning the Bundesliga, the DFB-Pokal (German Cup), and the German Super Cup over three seasons.

Alonso’s official unveiling as Real Madrid’s new manager will take place on Monday, May 26, at 12:30 p.m. during a presentation event at Real Madrid City. Prior to that, club president Florentino Pérez will preside over a formal signing ceremony to welcome him back.

Following his presentation, Alonso will address the media and outline his vision as he begins the next chapter in his football career—this time as the man tasked with leading Los Blancos from the sidelines.
