Awoniyi Out of Coma After Surgery for Serious Abdominal Injury

Taiwo Awoniyi, Nottingham Forest forward and Nigerian international, is recovering after being brought out of an induced coma following emergency surgery for a ruptured intestine. The injury occurred during Forest’s 2-2 draw against Leicester City on Sunday when Awoniyi collided with the goalpost.

Despite the severity of the impact, Awoniyi initially tried to continue playing. However, he was later taken to the hospital for further medical checks. Doctors confirmed he had suffered a ruptured intestine and performed the first stage of surgery on Monday. As a precaution, Awoniyi was placed in an induced coma on Tuesday while surgeons completed the second phase of the operation, including wound closure, on Wednesday. He was successfully brought out of the coma later that evening.

Since news of the injury emerged, there has been an outpouring of support from teammates, fans, and football figures around the world. Super Eagles captain Ahmed Musa, Napoli striker Victor Osimhen, Super Falcons star Rasheedat Ajibade, and Bundesliga side Union Berlin—Awoniyi’s former club—are among those who have sent messages of encouragement.

Former Nigerian presidential candidate Peter Obi also shared an emotional tribute, praising Awoniyi’s determination and the spirit he displayed by playing through such a serious injury. Obi highlighted Awoniyi’s dedication as a reflection of the resilient Nigerian spirit and called on the football community and citizens to support him through his recovery.

“It is both painful and telling that, even after colliding with the goalpost and sustaining what has now been revealed as a ruptured intestine, he pressed on, a testament to the Nigerian spirit: strong, unyielding, and ever-committed,” Obi said. He also urged for more recognition and proper care for athletes who make such sacrifices.

Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq joined in sending his best wishes, describing Awoniyi as a symbol of humility and community spirit. He noted that Awoniyi’s strong ties to his home state of Kwara and his generosity towards his community are as admirable as his football talent.

As Awoniyi continues his recovery, the widespread support he has received shows the high regard in which he is held, not only as a talented player but also as a respected figure off the pitch.
