Several people were injured on Monday evening after a car drove into a group of pedestrians during Liverpool FC’s English Premier League trophy parade.
The incident happened on Water Street in Liverpool, as thousands of fans gathered to celebrate the club’s latest EPL title. The festive mood quickly turned into shock and confusion as the vehicle plowed through part of the crowd.
Merseyside Police issued a statement confirming that a 53-year-old white British man from the Liverpool area has been arrested in connection with the collision. Investigations are ongoing to determine what led to the incident. “Extensive enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances leading up to the collision,” the police said in a post on X, formerly Twitter.
Liverpool FC also responded shortly after the incident, saying they are in direct communication with Merseyside Police. “Our thoughts and prayers are with those who have been affected by this serious incident,” the club said on X.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned the event, calling it “appalling.” He expressed his support for those impacted by the crash. “The scenes in Liverpool are appalling — my thoughts are with all those injured or affected,” he wrote in a post on X.
The parade had attracted a huge crowd, as is tradition when Liverpool FC celebrates major football achievements. Fans had lined the streets, waving flags and wearing club colors, eager to catch a glimpse of their heroes and the Premier League trophy.
Details about the number and condition of those injured have not yet been released by authorities. Police have urged anyone with footage or information about the incident to come forward and assist with the investigation.
The crash overshadowed what had been a moment of pride and celebration for Liverpool fans. Authorities are now working to piece together exactly how and why the vehicle ended up in the crowd, as the city deals with the aftermath of an otherwise joyous occasion turned tragic.
