
Kilifi Governor Gideon Mung’aro is mourning the death of his father, Mzee Gedion Baya Mung’aro, who died on June 15, 2025, while undergoing treatment at Kilifi County Hospital. The late Mzee Mung’aro will be laid to rest on Wednesday, June 25, at his home in Dabaso village, Watamu.
According to the funeral program, the body will leave the Kilifi County Hospital Funeral Home on Tuesday, June 24, for a service and overnight vigil at his home. The burial will take place the following day in what is expected to be a respectful and emotional farewell for a man many described as a strong family and community figure.
Governor Mung’aro shared the sad news on social media with a heartfelt message posted on Father’s Day. “Today, on Father’s Day, I have lost my father, Gideon Baya Mung’aro Senior,” he wrote. The governor reflected on the time they shared and expressed deep gratitude for the support his family has received since the announcement of the death.
The late Mzee Mung’aro leaves behind a large and extended family. He was the husband to Beatrice Bahati, the late Joyce Kanze Kombe, Janer Kofedha Darris Bahati, and Loyce Kache. His children include Governor Gideon Mung’aro, the late Furaha, Masha, Clement, Kadange, Kazungu, Santa, Garama, Masha Bogo, James, Masha Yellow, Masha BK Karisa, John, the late Josephine, Caroline Tabu, Brenda Nyevu, Aneline Salama, the late Sidi, Priscilla, Teresia Kaschana, Everlyne, Lydis Neema, Mercyline Karembo, Celestine Riziki, Grace Rehema, Frida, Elizabeth, the late Sheina, Clara, and Penina Zosi.
Many national leaders have extended their condolences to the Mung’aro family. Mombasa Governor Abdullswamad Sherrif Nassir and Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga sent messages of sympathy and solidarity. Cabinet Secretary for Mining and Blue Economy, Hassan Joho, also expressed sorrow over Mzee Mung’aro’s passing, calling it heartbreaking and offering prayers for strength to the family. Mzee Mung’aro’s death marks the end of an era for the Mung’aro family and the wider Kilifi community, where he was seen as a pillar of strength and wisdom.
