Four police officers lost their lives on Sunday evening, June 22, when their vehicle crashed along the Garissa Highway. The officers were travelling in a police vehicle that reportedly lost control and rolled several times, resulting in a deadly accident that also left two others critically injured.
Eyewitnesses say the vehicle was speeding before the driver lost control, causing it to overturn multiple times. The accident occurred on a stretch of road known for high-speed travel and poor driving habits. All four officers died at the scene, while the two survivors were rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition.
Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the crash. Preliminary reports suggest that speeding may have played a major role, but further assessments are being carried out. The bodies of the deceased officers have been moved to the mortuary as the investigation continues.
The National Police Service is yet to issue an official statement on the tragedy, which has deeply affected the police force and raised renewed concerns over officer safety while on duty.
Just hours before the Garissa crash, a separate road accident claimed the life of Beth Wahito, a nominated Member of County Assembly (MCA) from Nyandarua county. She died on the spot after a Guardian Angel bus collided with a private car at Naivasha Junction along the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway. Wahito, a respected leader with over three decades in politics, was mourned by many for her dedicated public service.
Another deadly accident occurred earlier on Sunday, June 15, in Kinangop, where two police officers and a pickup driver died after a head-on collision. The officers, who were responding to an earlier accident involving two motorcycles, were killed instantly when their vehicle collided with a speeding double-cabin pickup. Eight others were seriously injured and taken to nearby hospitals for emergency treatment.
Kenya continues to struggle with frequent road accidents, many caused by speeding, reckless driving, drunk driving, and mechanical failures. Poor road conditions and weak enforcement of traffic laws have made the situation worse, raising public concern over road safety across the country.
