Eight Killed, Over 400 Injured in Protests Across 23 Counties

Eight people were killed and more than 400 injured during nationwide protests held across Kenya, according to a joint statement by human rights groups. At least 83 of the injured are in serious condition, the coalition reported.

The protests, which took place in 23 counties, drew large crowds and led to clashes between demonstrators and police. The Kenya Medical Association, Law Society of Kenya, and the Police Reforms Working Group—an alliance that includes Amnesty International—confirmed the casualties and expressed condolences to the families of those who died.

Among the hundreds injured, at least eight suffered gunshot wounds. In addition, three police officers were also reported injured during the protests. Health officials in Matuu, located about 100 kilometers from Nairobi, confirmed that two people had died from gunshot injuries.

Meanwhile, Kenya Power announced that a security guard was shot under unclear circumstances near its headquarters in Nairobi during the unrest.

The coalition of rights groups condemned the violence and called on the police to exercise restraint while handling protesters. They also urged those still participating in demonstrations to remain cautious to avoid more injuries or loss of life.

“The death and injury toll is alarming. We ask the police to act professionally and within the law,” said the coalition in their joint statement.

The organizations highlighted the need for accountability in how security forces respond to public demonstrations. They also stressed the importance of upholding the rights of citizens to peacefully assemble and express their views.

As tensions continue, the rights coalition has asked government authorities to ensure that any ongoing operations to disperse crowds do not lead to further violence. They also emphasized the urgent need to investigate the incidents and ensure justice for the victims.

The protests reflect growing public frustration, though the specific causes were not detailed in the statement. The high number of casualties and the scale of the demonstrations suggest deep unrest in the country.

With medical personnel overwhelmed and some hospitals reporting critical injuries, the situation remains tense. Rights groups have pledged to continue monitoring developments and offering legal and medical support where needed.
