Trump Suggests Iran Regime Change as Tensions Escalate

President Donald Trump has sparked renewed speculation over possible regime change in Iran following recent U.S. airstrikes targeting Iranian nuclear sites. In a post on Truth Social on Sunday, June 22, 2025, Trump questioned whether Iran’s current leadership is capable of leading the country toward progress.

“It’s not politically correct to use the term ‘regime change,’ but if the current Iranian regime is unable to make Iran great again, why wouldn’t there be a regime change?” Trump wrote, adding fuel to already rising tensions in the region.

Trump’s remarks came just hours after top U.S. officials stated that the military strikes were not intended to overthrow Iran’s government. In appearances on Sunday political talk shows, Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio made it clear that regime change was not the objective of the operation.

Rubio emphasized that the mission specifically targeted three nuclear facilities tied to Iran’s suspected weapons program. “This was not an attack on the Iranian people or an attempt to force regime change,” he said. Rubio also urged Tehran to consider diplomacy, saying that a peaceful and mutually beneficial agreement remains possible.

Despite these official positions, Trump’s comments have reignited concern over U.S. intentions. Meanwhile, Iran has vowed to retaliate for the airstrikes, which included the use of powerful 30,000-pound bunker-buster bombs on its Fordow nuclear site hidden deep within a mountain.

On Monday, June 23, Iran’s Army Commander-in-Chief, Major General Amir Hatami, issued a stern warning to the U.S., promising a forceful response to any further aggression. “Americans have received a decisive response every time they have committed crimes, and it will be the same this time,” he said. Hatami also accused the U.S. of being behind the latest escalation.

Tehran responded by launching a ballistic missile early Monday, which was intercepted by Israeli forces. Iran has also threatened to target U.S. military installations across the region, raising fears of a wider conflict.

At home, the strikes have sparked anti-war protests in several American cities, with demonstrators calling for de-escalation and warning against another drawn-out conflict in the Middle East.
