Tension is rising in Nyandarua County after a suspect was found dead in a police cell under unclear circumstances, with residents and leaders calling for justice and transparency in the investigation.
The deceased, whose identity has not been made public, was reportedly being held at a local police station when officers said he died by suicide. However, the manner of his death has raised serious questions among locals, who suspect foul play.
Area leaders have strongly condemned the incident, demanding immediate answers from the police. Nyandarua Woman Representative Faith Gitau led calls for accountability, insisting that law enforcement officers must explain how someone in their custody ended up dead. Residents have joined in, expressing outrage over what they see as a disturbing pattern of deaths occurring while suspects are in police custody.
Speaking during a press briefing, local leader Muhia urged President William Ruto to step in and protect the lives of ordinary Kenyans. “We are appealing to the president to protect Kenyans. It cannot be that those tasked with our safety have now become the greatest threat,” she said.
Muhia also raised concerns about the planned postmortem, accusing authorities of attempting to rush the process. She warned against conducting an autopsy without full transparency, saying it could undermine public trust in the outcome.
The incident has ignited renewed fears about police brutality and the abuse of power by law enforcement. Many in the community are calling for an independent investigation to determine what really happened in the cell.
Meanwhile, human rights groups have also taken an interest in the case, warning that Kenya’s justice system must uphold the rule of law, especially in cases involving the deaths of suspects in custody.
As calls for justice grow louder, the spotlight is now on the police and how they handle the situation. The government is yet to issue an official statement on the matter, but public pressure continues to mount. The people of Nyandarua are demanding answers—not just for the deceased, but to ensure such incidents do not happen again.
