Several Feared Dead After Truck Crashes Into Kisii Market Crowd

Several people are feared dead and many others injured after a truck lost control and crashed into vendors and boda boda riders at the busy Daraja Mbili market in Kisii County. The tragic incident happened on the morning of Wednesday, August 6, shocking traders and locals at the scene.

According to initial reports, the truck was descending from Kisii town toward the market when it experienced brake failure. It veered off the road and ploughed through the crowded market area, hitting roadside vendors and boda boda operators gathered at the roadside.

The out-of-control truck also collided with other vehicles, including a Toyota Probox and a tuk-tuk, adding to the chaos and destruction at the scene. The force of the crash caused serious injuries and left the area in a state of panic.

Eyewitnesses described a horrifying scene as the truck tore through the market, with people running for safety and others trapped under the wreckage. Emergency response teams from the Kisii County government quickly arrived to offer first aid and transport the injured to nearby hospitals.

While the exact number of casualties is yet to be confirmed, authorities have expressed concern that the death toll could be significant due to the crowded nature of the market and the force of the impact. Investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the brake failure and to assess whether the vehicle met safety standards.

This deadly crash comes just a day after another fatal road accident occurred on the Nakuru-Eldoret Highway, near the Mbaruk area. On Monday, August 4, at around 6:30 PM, five people lost their lives in a separate incident involving three vehicles.

In that case, a Toyota Fielder with five occupants was overtaking when it collided head-on with a saloon car. The impact caused the Fielder to swerve into a Mercedes-Benz Actros trailer. All five passengers—two men, two women, and a child—died at the scene. Images of the crash showed the Fielder severely damaged and on fire.

Both accidents have reignited concerns about road safety and vehicle maintenance across Kenyan roads
