Eight Dead After Train Hits KPC Staff Bus at Naivasha Crossing

At least eight people were killed and several others injured on Thursday afternoon when a Kenya Railways train collided with a Kenya Pipeline Company (KPC) staff bus at a level crossing near Morendat Farm in Naivasha.

The accident happened next to the Kenya Pipeline Company’s Morendat Training and Conference Centre. The bus was reportedly ferrying KPC employees home after their morning shift when it was struck by an oncoming train as it attempted to cross the tracks.

Kenya Pipeline Company and Kenya Railways both confirmed the tragic incident, noting that emergency teams were quickly dispatched to the scene to assist the injured and begin investigations into the cause of the crash.

KPC Managing Director Joe Sang said the company’s emergency response units coordinated with local authorities to rush the injured to nearby hospitals. Air evacuation plans were also activated for victims in critical condition.

“We are working closely with medical teams and local authorities to ensure the injured receive the best possible care and to facilitate airlifts for the critically injured,” said Sang. “At this time, our thoughts and prayers are with our colleagues and their families.”

First responders from KPC and local emergency services handled rescue operations on the ground, stabilising victims and evacuating them from the crash site.

Sang added that KPC has mobilised its internal welfare and psychosocial support teams to help staff and their families deal with the trauma. “Our priority is supporting affected employees and their families,” he said.

While the exact cause of the collision has not been determined, heavy rainfall and foggy conditions were reported in the area at the time, raising the possibility that poor visibility played a role.

Kenya Railways also released a statement expressing condolences to the bereaved families and urging caution. “Motorists and the general public are advised to take caution when crossing the railway line at level crossings to avoid collision with approaching trains,” it said.

Both KPC and Kenya Railways pledged continued support for the affected individuals and families as investigations into the deadly incident proceed.
