Two Pennsylvania Troopers Shot, Suspect Killed in Thompson Township

Two Pennsylvania state troopers were shot Thursday morning during an incident in Susquehanna County, northeastern Pennsylvania, prompting a large emergency response and ongoing investigation by state police.

The shooting occurred near Route 171 in Thompson Township, a rural area located about 40 miles north of Scranton. Pennsylvania State Trooper Rob Urban confirmed that both troopers were flown to a nearby hospital for treatment and that the suspect involved in the incident was shot and killed. Authorities are still trying to determine if the shooting was part of an ambush intended to lure officers to the location.

Governor Josh Shapiro addressed the situation during an event held outside Philadelphia, expressing concern and offering prayers for the injured officers. “About an hour ago in Susquehanna County, two state troopers were shot. Lori and I are praying for those troopers,” Shapiro said. “I’ve spoken with Colonel Christopher Paris, who is already on the scene. It remains an active situation, and I plan to go there myself once it concludes.”

Colonel Paris currently leads the Pennsylvania State Police. The full details of what led to the shooting have not yet been released, but state police officials have confirmed that an investigation is underway. Trooper Logan T. Brouse, a spokesperson for the department, stated the incident occurred along Route 171, close to the village of Thompson.

Public officials across Pennsylvania responded with concern. U.S. Senator Dave McCormick shared a statement via social media, noting that he was closely following the developments. “Dina and I are praying for our brave state troopers in Susquehanna County and monitoring the situation closely as more details emerge,” he wrote.

Congressman Rob Bresnahan also posted about the incident on X (formerly Twitter), saying he was “relieved to hear the troopers involved in today's incident in Thompson Township are expected to be in stable condition.”

The names of the troopers and the suspect have not yet been made public, and the investigation continues as authorities work to establish a clear timeline and motive behind the attack.
