Police Officer Held for Demanding KSh 4,000 Bribe to Arrest Suspect

A police constable in Nairobi has been arrested for allegedly demanding a KSh 4,000 bribe from a complainant in exchange for arresting a suspect.

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) confirmed on Thursday, August 14, that Police Constable Philip Ochieng’ Adongo, who was stationed at Sarang’ombe Police Post, was taken into custody over the bribery allegations. According to the EACC, the money was meant to serve as an inducement for him to carry out an arrest in a reported case.

“The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has arrested Police Constable (PC) Philip Ochieng’ Adongo… on allegations of soliciting and receiving a bribe in connection with a case,” part of the statement from the EACC read.

The matter had initially been reported at the Sarang’ombe Police Station under OB number 16/18/07/2025. Following this report, the EACC launched an operation that resulted in the arrest of Adongo and another suspect, a civilian identified as George Otieno Oywer.

Investigations revealed that Oywer allegedly received the bribe on behalf of Officer Adongo, linking him directly to the case. The EACC stated that both suspects were apprehended and taken to the commission’s Integrity Centre for further processing.

Photographs shared by the EACC showed the two suspects after their arrest, underscoring the commission’s ongoing efforts to combat corruption within public service.

In its statement, the EACC reaffirmed its resolve to address bribery cases, especially at key service delivery points such as police stations. “The Commission reiterates its commitment to tackling bribery at service delivery points to restore public confidence and enhance service delivery to all Kenyans,” it said.

The arrest adds to growing concerns over misconduct within the police service, where officers are expected to enforce the law impartially but are sometimes accused of exploiting their positions for personal gain. The EACC has urged members of the public to continue reporting cases of bribery and corruption to help strengthen accountability and integrity in public offices.

Both Adongo and Oywer remain in custody as the investigation continues, with possible legal action expected once the inquiry is completed.
