European Airports Hit by Cyberattack, Check-In Systems Disrupted

European airports faced widespread disruption over the weekend after a cyberattack crippled check-in systems, leaving airlines and passengers struggling to adapt. The outage forced many airports to rely on manual check-in procedures as technicians raced to restore normal operations.

The problem began on Saturday and was confirmed by RTX, the company responsible for the affected systems. In a brief statement, RTX said it was working to fix the issue “as quickly as possible.” The company added that while the cyberattack had caused significant difficulties, the impact could be reduced by switching to manual check-in, though this process was far slower and created long queues in many terminals.

Passengers across multiple European airports reported delays, missed connections, and confusion as airlines tried to adjust their operations. For many travelers, the disruptions came at a particularly challenging time, with the busy travel season in full swing. Staff at several airports were seen assisting passengers by handwriting boarding passes and manually verifying documents, a process that slowed boarding procedures and increased waiting times.

While officials confirmed that flight safety was not compromised, the cyberattack exposed the vulnerability of airport systems to digital threats. Airlines and airport authorities stressed that every effort was being made to minimize the disruption, but also acknowledged that the outage had affected thousands of travelers across the continent.

By Sunday, technicians were still working on restoring full system functionality, though no clear timeline was provided for a complete resolution. RTX, which has not offered further public comment since Saturday, remains under pressure to explain the cause of the cyberattack and the steps being taken to prevent future incidents.

This latest disruption highlights the growing risk of cyberattacks on critical infrastructure. Airports, which depend heavily on digital systems for passenger processing, remain prime targets for malicious actors seeking to cause maximum disruption.

As work continues to stabilize operations, passengers are being advised to arrive at airports earlier than usual and to prepare for possible delays at check-in counters. For many affected travelers, the weekend served as a reminder of just how dependent modern air travel has become on secure, functioning technology.
