In a move that challenges the recent claim by Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, the Mount Kenya East Members of Parliament (MPs) have endorsed Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki as their regional kingpin. The decision was announced by Mbeere MP Geoffrey Ruku during a press conference on September 9.
Ruku, who was accompanied by other leaders such as Tigania East MP Mpuru Aburi and Igembe South MP Paul Mwirigi, stated that CS Kindiki will act as a link between the region and the Executive. The Mbeere legislator highlighted that Mount Kenya East has significant voting numbers, making them critical in shaping the political and development direction of the country.
This endorsement comes after DP Gachagua recently announced former President Uhuru Kenyatta as the Mount Kenya region's kingpin. Gachagua made the claim while speaking during a church service in Meru County, stating that Uhuru had advised the region to support former Prime Minister Raila Odinga during the 2022 general elections, but they didn't listen to him, and now they have heeded his advice.
The DP added that the Mount Kenya region has studied politics and decided never to hate any politician or community again, emphasizing that building friendships is key to thriving in Kenyan politics.
However, the move by the Mount Kenya East MPs to endorse CS Kindiki as their regional kingpin suggests a different perspective within the region. By settling for Kindiki, the leadership hopes to reap more benefits from the government since one of their own serves in the Cabinet.
This development has also sparked criticism from some leaders within the Mount Kenya region, notably National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichungwah, who has argued that DP Gachagua has allegedly been party to those exploiting tea farmers.
The endorsement of CS Kindiki by the Mount Kenya East MPs is a significant political move, as it challenges the narrative presented by DP Gachagua and highlights the diverse perspectives and power dynamics within the Mount Kenya region.
