Ghana's Electoral Commission Rejects NDC's Call for Independent Voter Register Audit

Ghana's Electoral Commission (EC) has called the National Democratic Congress (NDC) party's demand for an independent forensic audit of the voter register for the 2024 elections premature. The EC insists that existing laws already provide for an internal audit, making external involvement unnecessary.

At a news conference held at its headquarters, the EC assured that it has taken steps to correct any anomalies in the register. The Commission urged the NDC's presidential candidate to persuade party members to cancel their planned demonstration against the EC on September 17, warning that it could create unnecessary tension.

The EC explained that the voter registration exhibition process serves as an audit in itself. This process allows citizens to verify their personal details and identify any discrepancies in the register. The Commission emphasized that it is responsible and capable of addressing any issues with the provisional voter register without external assistance.

The NDC had previously raised concerns about five specific issues with the provisional voter register and requested a re-exhibition. In response, the EC assured that the discrepancies identified are not new and are being resolved through the Commission's established four-pronged approach, which involves officers at various levels.

Reiterating its commitment to transparency, the EC highlighted that the law provides remedies for fixing discrepancies. These include adding omitted names, objecting to unqualified voters, removing names of deceased individuals, and correcting registration details. The Commission noted that it has consistently applied these processes since 1992.

The EC called on the NDC to trust in its ability to rectify any issues with the provisional voter register, stating that most of the concerns have already been addressed. The Commission also requested the NDC to provide details of the discrepancies they have found, including the list of 50,000 deceased persons they claim are still on the register, to enable thorough investigation and resolution.

Emphasizing the importance of collaboration, the EC stated that the best way to ensure a credible and robust voter register is through discussion and cooperation, not demonstrations. The Commission expressed confidence in its capacity to provide the nation and all political parties with a reliable and credible voter register for the 2024 general elections.

In conclusion, the EC remains steadfast in its role and responsibilities, assuring all stakeholders of its commitment to a fair and transparent electoral process. The Commission encouraged all parties to engage constructively to uphold the integrity of Ghana's democratic system.
