The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kogi State has suspended former Senator Dino Melaye due to his anti-party activities. The suspension was decided by the PDP executive committee during a meeting in Aiyetoro Gbede, Ward 1, after reviewing a disciplinary report against Melaye.
Dino Melaye, who represented Kogi West in the 8th Senate, was previously invited to appear before a disciplinary committee to address allegations of acting against the party's interests. However, he refused to attend the summons, prompting the party to take action against him.
On Friday, the Ward party executive committee met in Aiyetoro/Luagba Ward 1 and unanimously resolved to suspend Melaye. The resolution was officially signed by Ward Chairman Abayomi Osamika and Ward Yodson Dayo, the Secretary.
According to the resolution reviewed by THE WHISTLER, Melaye’s actions have caused embarrassment and disrepute to the PDP, making his continued membership untenable. The resolution stated, “Senator Dino Melaye’s conduct has brought embarrassment and disrepute to the party and his continued membership is no longer tenable.”
The suspension is effective immediately and is in line with Article 59 (1) of the PDP constitution, which empowers Ward party executives to take disciplinary actions against members who violate party rules.
The conflict arose after Melaye publicly criticized key PDP leaders, including the acting National Chairman Iliya Damagum, National Secretary Samuel Anyanwu, and National Organising Secretary Umar Bature. On the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Melaye accused them of destroying the party, stating, “End of the road for PDP as Damagum, Bature and Anyanwu, irredeemably destroyed the party.”
Additionally, Melaye hinted at significant changes for the PDP, suggesting the possibility of commercialization and privatization. He remarked, “We will talk about the commercialization and privatization of PDP. PDP is now once upon a time,” indicating his belief that the party had lost its original essence.
These statements were perceived as direct attacks on the party’s leadership, leading the PDP Kogi State chapter to act swiftly to maintain unity and discipline within the party. The suspension of Dino Melaye underscores the internal tensions and challenges the PDP faces in Kogi State as it strives to uphold its values and cohesion among members.
