Kenyan 3x3 Basketball Teams Head to FIBA World Cup in Mongolia

Kenya's Under-23 national 3x3 basketball teams are set to represent the country at the FIBA World Cup in Mongolia, with the women's team scheduled to face off against Poland and host Mongolia on Wednesday.

The teams, comprising four male and four female players, departed for Mongolia aboard Turkish Airlines at the last minute, accompanied by their coaches, a team doctor, and a physiotherapist.

According to the Kenya Basketball Federation (KBF) secretary-general, Angela Luchivya, the national teams held their final training sessions at Strathmore University courts just yesterday, in preparation for the upcoming tournament.

The women's team, coached by Eunice Ouma, will face Poland and host Mongolia on Wednesday, with the men's team, coached by Tonny Ochieng', scheduled to take on Latvia, Chile, the USA, and defending champions Lithuania in the group stage.

The male players representing Kenya are David Gichohi from Vikapu Elite Academy, Elisha Odhiambo from KBF's men's premier league club Ulinzi Warriors, and Jackson Waweru and Denis Koja, both from premier side Strathmore Blades.

The women's team features MaryLisa Omondi from KBF's premier side United States International University (USIU), Barbra Achieng' from premier club Storms, Emily Bosibori from Stanbic Aces, and Kenyan international Judith Omedi, who plays in Thailand.

Kenya earned a wild card to compete in the World Cup after the disruption of the country's opportunity to host the FIBA 3x3 Youth Nations League Africa-1 (YNLA-1) conference qualifiers in Mombasa due to unexpected pro-good governance protests by the younger generation across the country.

Egypt, the highest-ranked basketball nation in Africa, was also awarded a wild card to compete in the FIBA World Cup due to its inability to participate in the disrupted YNLA-1 event that Kenya was set to host.

The YNLA-1 in Mombasa was originally scheduled to feature teams from Algeria, Benin, Tunisia, and Uganda.
