Governor Usman Ododo has approved a new minimum wage of ₦72,500 for workers in Kogi State following the recommendations of the State Minimum Wage Committee. The announcement was made on Monday, October 7, during a meeting at the Government House in Lokoja, where the governor officially received the committee’s report.
“This approval is the product of extensive discussions, and I am delighted to set the minimum wage at ₦72,500 for all categories of workers,” Governor Ododo said. He emphasized that the decision reflects his administration’s dedication to improving the welfare of civil servants across the state.
Alongside the wage adjustment, the governor also declared a one-year tax relief for all civil servants in Kogi State. This move, which was met with widespread applause from attendees, is expected to provide financial relief to workers and improve their disposable income during the period.
Governor Ododo urged all public employees to remain committed to supporting the government’s vision for transforming the state. He reiterated that the wage increase and tax relief were among the pledges he made during his campaign, and he is pleased to fulfill them early in his tenure.
The Head of Service and Chairman of the Kogi State Minimum Wage Committee, Mr. Elijah Abenemi, praised the government’s responsiveness to the needs of workers. According to Abenemi, the committee was established on September 17, 2024, and explored several options for implementing the wage increase. The chosen solution, he explained, balances the financial capacity of the state while prioritizing the well-being of its workforce.
“It was a challenging assignment, but we are pleased the Governor chose the most beneficial option for our workers,” Mr. Abenemi stated. He added that the new minimum wage reflects a strong commitment to ensuring that all categories of workers benefit fairly.
Labour leaders have lauded the decision, describing it as a step in the right direction. Comrade Gabriel Amari, Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress in Kogi State, expressed gratitude on behalf of the workers, commending Governor Ododo’s “magnanimity” and willingness to address workers' concerns. The decision is expected to strengthen the relationship between the state government and its workforce, fostering a more productive public service environment.
With the new minimum wage and tax relief in place, Kogi State workers are hopeful that these measures will lead to an improved quality of life and a more prosperous future for all state employees.
