Idris Elba, the acclaimed British actor with strong African roots, has announced plans to relocate to Africa within the next decade. His primary goal is to help revitalize the African film industry and empower local filmmakers to tell authentic African stories. This decision marks a significant commitment from the actor, who has starred in major productions like The Wire and Luther, to use his influence to support Africa’s growing film scene.
Elba, who was born in London to parents from Ghana and Sierra Leone, has long expressed his deep connection to the African continent. His plan to establish film studios in countries like Tanzania and Ghana is part of a broader vision to make Africa a major player in the global film industry. He believes that for the African film business to truly grow, Africans need to lead in every aspect of filmmaking—from acting and production to financing, distribution, and showcasing their own stories.
In a recent interview, the 52-year-old actor spoke about his plans, saying, “I think I’ll move [to Africa] in the next five to ten years, God willing. I’m here to bolster the film industry—that is a ten-year process. I won’t be able to do that from overseas. I need to be in-country, on the continent.” This statement underscores his commitment not only to the African film industry but also to physically being present to make a difference.
Elba also highlighted the challenges that the African film industry faces, including issues like piracy and limited access to proper training. However, he remains optimistic, believing that with the right support and investment, Africa’s film industry has tremendous potential for growth. He envisions a future where global audiences will better understand the diversity of the African continent, beyond the usual stereotypes often shown in international media.
By investing in African filmmaking, Elba hopes to help the continent shape its own cultural identity and inspire the next generation of storytellers. His upcoming move reflects a long-term dedication to ensuring that African stories are told by African voices, for both local and international audiences.
