Grammy Award-winning rapper Lil Durk, whose real name is Durk Devontay Banks, was arrested in Broward County, Florida, on Thursday night on a murder-for-hire charge. The 33-year-old rapper, known for his work in the US drill rap scene and hits with stars like Drake and J Cole, is currently being held without bail. The arrest, first reported by CBS News, follows an ongoing investigation into violent incidents involving members of his hip-hop collective, Only The Family (OTF).
The arrest came just a day after five men connected to OTF were charged in Chicago in connection with a fatal 2022 shooting involving rival rapper Quando Rondo’s cousin, Saviay’a Robinson. This shooting is believed to have been an act of retaliation for the 2020 death of rapper King Von, who was an OTF member. US media report that these five men allegedly plotted to kill Quando Rondo, offering financial rewards and music industry opportunities to anyone who participated in the attack. In 2022, some of the accused men reportedly shot at a car carrying Quando Rondo, his sister, and his cousin, resulting in Robinson’s death while Quando Rondo and his sister escaped unharmed.
Lil Durk’s career has seen tremendous success, with six of his albums reaching the top five on the US Billboard charts since 2019. He also received his first Grammy Award in February for the song All My Life, featuring J Cole. Despite his success in music, Lil Durk has faced multiple legal issues over the years, including a 2019 non-fatal shooting in Atlanta, where attempted murder charges against him were later dropped.
The rapper’s hip-hop group, OTF, has been at the forefront of Chicago’s drill rap scene since its founding in 2010, but it has also been linked to violence and rivalries within the industry. Reports have connected OTF to several high-profile incidents, such as the alleged 2020 shooting of another Chicago rapper, FBG Duck. Recently, FBG Duck’s mother reportedly filed a lawsuit against Lil Durk, OTF, and King Von, alleging their involvement in her son’s death.
As of now, Lil Durk’s representatives have not commented on his arrest, and further details regarding the murder-for-hire charge have not been released. His arrest adds a new dimension to the ongoing investigations surrounding OTF and raises concerns about the future of one of hip-hop’s prominent figures.
