Renowned Nigerian actor Abdulsalam Sanyaolu, known by his stage name Charles Olumo or “Baba Agbako,” has died at the age of 101. His passing on October 31, 2024, marks the end of an era for the Nigerian film industry, particularly the Yoruba movie scene, where he was a celebrated figure for over 40 years. His death was confirmed by Bolaji Amusan, popularly known as Mr. Latin, the president of the Theatre Arts and Motion Pictures Practitioners Association of Nigeria (TAMPAN), who announced the news on Instagram, saying, “#tampanglobal announces the passing of Pa Charles Olumo Sanyaolu, fondly known as AGBAKO.”
Charles Olumo, often recognized by his character “Agbako,” captivated audiences with his thrilling performances in various Yoruba films. He became known for his unique roles, frequently playing action-packed and intense characters that left a lasting impact on Nigerian cinema. Agbako’s roles in films like Taxi Driver, Jagun, Amin Orun, Aiye, Jayesinmi, Soworo Ide, and Igbo Dudu have endeared him to generations of fans. Despite his age, he remained dedicated to his craft and often visited film sets until recently, sharing his talent and experience with younger actors.
Agbako’s long and vibrant career began in 1953 when he started acting in the Apostolic Church, Mushin, Lagos. After working as a mechanic and an amateur boxer, he transitioned fully to acting, joining drama groups and training church drama teams. His dedication to acting led him to join Nollywood, where he gained national fame, particularly in the Yoruba film industry. His unique style and strong presence made him a staple in Nigerian cinema, and his contributions are widely recognized by colleagues and fans alike.
Following the announcement, tributes poured in from across Nigeria’s entertainment industry. Veteran actor Jide Kosoko expressed his condolences, saying, “Good night, Baba Charles, a.k.a Agbako.” These tributes highlight the immense impact Agbako had on the Nigerian film community and underscore the respect he garnered from peers and fans alike.
While details of his burial arrangements have yet to be announced, his legacy in the Nigerian entertainment world is indelible.
