Iraq Files UN Complaint Over Israel's Alleged Airspace Violation

Iraq has officially filed a complaint with the United Nations Security Council, claiming that Israel used Iraqi airspace to conduct an airstrike on Iran on October 26, according to a statement from Iraqi government spokesman Basim Alawadi. The complaint accuses Israel of blatantly violating Iraq’s sovereignty, sparking serious concerns about the country’s territorial integrity and regional stability.

In his statement on Monday, Alawadi expressed Iraq’s firm stance against any unauthorized use of its airspace for attacks on other nations, especially on neighboring countries with whom Iraq maintains diplomatic ties and mutual interests. "Iraq will not allow its airspace or land to be used for attacks on other nations," the statement said, emphasizing the nation’s commitment to preventing its territory from becoming a battleground in broader regional conflicts.

The Iraqi government further highlighted that it seeks to maintain regional stability and is actively working to avoid being drawn into conflicts that could disrupt the fragile peace in the area. Iraq and Iran share a 1,500-kilometer border, and ties between the two nations are particularly strong. Iran holds significant influence within Iraq, with deep-rooted connections among political parties and militias that remain aligned with Tehran’s interests.

In addition to directing its complaint at Israel, Iraq is also addressing the United States, as U.S. forces currently oversee Iraqi airspace under a military cooperation agreement. Baghdad has stated it plans to discuss the issue with the U.S. to determine whether American authorities were aware of, or involved in, any actions that could compromise Iraqi sovereignty.

This complaint underscores Iraq’s commitment to asserting control over its airspace and maintaining neutrality in escalating regional tensions. As Iraq navigates the complex dynamics with both Iran and the U.S., it remains determined to protect its territorial integrity and uphold principles of mutual respect with neighboring countries. The complaint at the UN aims to reinforce Iraq's position on neutrality and its insistence on not being used as a channel for conflicts in the region
