At least 51 people have lost their lives after intense rains triggered flash floods across southeastern Spain, especially hitting the Valencia region. In Chiva, a town near Valencia, authorities report that more than a year's worth of rain fell in just eight hours, creating severe flooding that has swept through streets and towns. Local officials say it’s “impossible” to determine the full death toll at this stage, with many people still unaccounted for.
The heavy rain and hailstorms have affected a large part of the country, and reports indicate extensive flooding across various areas. Over 1,000 troops are deployed to aid the rescue efforts, as the Spanish government attempts to reach those stranded and assist families looking for loved ones. Damage has also been reported in the Balearic Islands, adding to the severity of the crisis. As the situation unfolded, emergency lines have been flooded with calls for help, from individuals trapped in floodwaters to families seeking information about missing members.
The impact of the floods has also prompted a response from Spain’s King Felipe VI, who shared his condolences on social media, saying he was “devastated” by the disaster. His message of sympathy to the families of those who lost their lives comes as Spain copes with one of the deadliest flooding events in recent years. On Tuesday evening, the streets of Chiva quickly transformed into raging rivers, carrying away cars, street lamps, and benches with the powerful force of the water.
While the floodwaters rose rapidly, a critical delay in alerting the public has drawn heavy criticism. Residents of the Valencia region reportedly received a civil protection warning more than two hours after flooding began. This timing is now under scrutiny, with many arguing that an earlier alert could have allowed people more time to get to safer ground or move to higher floors.
Spain’s defense minister, Margarita Robles, described the flooding as “an unprecedented phenomenon.” She emphasized the difficulties faced by emergency responders, who were on the ground throughout the night but struggled with the sheer volume of water. Regional government representatives echoed her concerns, noting that primary and secondary roads have been severely impacted, making access nearly impossible in some areas.
“Not going out is not a mere recommendation, it is a necessity to guarantee the safety of those stranded and the rescuers,” said Pilar Bernabe, a government spokesperson for the region. The Valencia city hall responded by closing schools and parks on Wednesday, with all sporting events suspended to ensure public safety.
Experts point to climate change as a factor in such extreme weather events, as warmer atmospheric conditions make intense rainfall more likely. The global temperature has already risen by around 1.1°C since the start of the industrial era, and continued warming could lead to even more frequent severe weather events if significant cuts in emissions are not implemented globally.
