Kenya Faces Zimbabwe in Crucial AFCON Qualifier Tonight

Harambee Stars face a do-or-die clash against Zimbabwe tonight in a Group J qualifier for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). Kenya’s chances of making it to the tournament hang by a thread after October’s disappointing losses to Cameroon. A win is essential to keep their qualification hopes alive.

Kenya must defeat Zimbabwe at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane, South Africa, and win their final group game against Namibia on Tuesday. They also need Zimbabwe to lose or draw their last match against Cameroon to have a chance at finishing second in the group.

The stakes couldn’t be higher for the Harambee Stars. A loss tonight would eliminate them from the race, while a win keeps their AFCON dreams alive.

Kenya had a promising start to their AFCON qualifiers, earning four points from two games in September. However, consecutive losses to Cameroon in October — a 4-1 away defeat and a narrow 1-0 loss at home — dealt a heavy blow to their campaign.

Despite their inconsistent away form under coach Engin Firat, the Stars have history on their side. Kenya is unbeaten in their last five encounters with Zimbabwe, with three wins and two draws. The Warriors’ only victory against Kenya dates back to the 1985 CECAFA finals.

Zimbabwe has been solid in the qualifiers, boasting an unbeaten record with two wins and two draws. Led by coach Michael Nees, the Warriors have conceded only one goal in four matches. Despite disruptions to their preparations due to heavy rains in Polokwane, the team remains confident.

Key to Zimbabwe’s success has been their defensive strength and familiarity with South African conditions, where they have played several matches. Nees is optimistic but cautious, saying, “We control our destiny, but we must stay focused and finish strong.”

Zimbabwe will miss star striker Tino Kadewere due to injury, and Munashe Garananga is doubtful. Kenya has also faced challenges, with coach Firat making notable squad changes. Patrick Matasi has been replaced by Farouk Shikalo as goalkeeper, while Amos Wanjala has been called up to strengthen the team. Key absences include Zak Vyner, Geoffrey Ochieng, and Sylvester Owino

Tonight’s match is a high-stakes battle for both teams. Kenya must secure a vital win to keep their AFCON dreams alive, while Zimbabwe will aim to extend their unbeaten streak and edge closer to qualification. With so much at stake, all eyes are on Polokwane as the two sides face off in a match that could define their AFCON campaigns.
