British National Among 14 Killed in New Orleans Vehicle Attack

A devastating vehicle attack in New Orleans on New Year’s Day left at least 14 people dead, including a British national. The incident occurred in the city's popular French Quarter around 3:15 a.m. local time (9:15 a.m. GMT) on Bourbon Street, a hub for nightlife.

The victim was identified as 31-year-old Edward Pettifer from Chelsea, London. He was struck by a pick-up truck that barreled through crowds. The New Orleans coroner confirmed that Pettifer died from “blunt force injuries.” His family released a tribute, expressing their devastation at his death. “Ed was a wonderful son, brother, grandson, nephew, and friend to so many. We will all miss him terribly,” the family said. They also offered condolences to the other victims’ families. The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office has pledged support to Pettifer’s grieving family.

The attack was carried out by 42-year-old Shamsud-Din Jabbar, a Texas resident and US Army veteran. Jabbar drove through Bourbon Street before exiting the vehicle and firing a weapon. He was shot and killed by police at the scene. The FBI later revealed that an Islamic State group flag was found in Jabbar's truck, and two improvised explosive devices were discovered nearby, indicating that the attack was planned.

The other victims of the attack included a promising American college football player, an aspiring nurse, and a mother of a young child. As of now, 39 people have been reported injured, with several still in critical condition. Authorities have emphasized the need for heightened security measures in crowded public areas.

In the wake of the attack, Bourbon Street reopened on Thursday morning, just in time for the Sugar Bowl, a major college football event in the city. Despite the tragedy, New Orleans remains committed to preserving its vibrant culture and resilience in the face of adversity.
