Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem was taken to the hospital on Tuesday after experiencing an allergic reaction, according to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The incident prompted immediate medical attention, although officials say she is now recovering.
Tricia McLaughlin, Assistant Secretary at DHS, confirmed the development in a statement shared with CBS News. “Secretary Noem is alert and recovering,” McLaughlin said. “She was transported to the hospital out of an abundance of caution.”
Sources revealed that Noem was taken to George Washington University Hospital in Washington, D.C., where she is being monitored. She was accompanied by members of her security team during the hospital visit.
Noem, 53, has a long history in public service. Before leading the Department of Homeland Security, she served as the Governor of South Dakota and was previously elected as a U.S. representative. In her current role, she oversees a department with more than 260,000 employees and a broad range of responsibilities critical to national security.
The DHS is tasked with managing immigration enforcement, border security, airport and transportation safety, natural disaster response, cybersecurity, and protecting national leaders through agencies like the Secret Service. It also manages the Coast Guard during peacetime. The department was established following the September 11 terrorist attacks and remains the newest major cabinet-level agency in the U.S. government.
